Good weather. Ideal fishing conditions. Consistent pushes of chrome-bright kings. Familiar faces. New friendships. Another unforgettable Chinook season on Alaska’s Last Frontier.
The 2026 king salmon season reminded us why we continue to believe the Alaska Peninsula offers one of the finest swing fisheries anywhere. While every season tells a different story, this year was defined by steady arrivals of ocean-fresh Chinook, excellent fishing conditions, and the return of so many familiar faces.
Across Sandy River Lodge and Sapsuk River Camp, guests immersed themselves in another memorable June on the Alaska Peninsula—swinging flies through classic runs, chasing chrome-bright kings, and ending each day with exceptional meals, great conversation, and stories that grew with every telling.
The 2026 king season wasn’t defined by one spectacular week—it was defined by consistency. From opening day through the final week, both Sandy River Lodge and Sapsuk River Camp provided anglers with regular opportunities at Chinook salmon. Every week featured a handful of exceptional days as new pushes of fish entered the rivers, but no single week clearly outshined the others. Instead, the fishing remained remarkably steady from start to finish.
Early in the season, cool temperatures and a mix of sunshine and clouds created ideal conditions as chrome-bright kings began entering the rivers. As June progressed, stable water levels, favorable weather, and periodic rises in river flow continued to bring new fish upstream. Toward the latter part of the season, an extended stretch of dry weather lowered river levels and slowed the pace at which fish moved inland. Even so, fresh fish continued to trickle into both systems throughout the season, and sea lice remained common on many of the Chinook landed—a clear indication that these salmon had only recently left the ocean.
One of the biggest surprises came during the final weeks on both the Sandy and Sapsuk rivers. Rather than seeing the typical transition to more colored fish, anglers continued to encounter remarkably bright Chinook, suggesting the seasonal progression was running slightly later than in recent years.
Perhaps the biggest story of the season, however, was the size of the fish. Average king salmon were noticeably larger than we’ve seen over the past several years, with an impressive number reaching the 30-pound class. At Sapsuk River Camp, several truly exceptional Chinook eclipsed the 40-pound mark, providing guests with unforgettable battles against some of the largest salmon landed in recent memory.
As always, king salmon had the final say. There were blistering runs, pulled hooks, and fish that left anglers shaking their heads long after they disappeared downstream. Fortunately, there were just as many unforgettable victories, making 2026 another memorable king season on the Alaska Peninsula.
One of the greatest parts of every king season isn’t measured in fish—it’s measured in people. The majority of our guests were returning anglers, many of whom have spent years making annual pilgrimages to these rivers. Watching old friends reunite each June has become just as much a tradition as the salmon themselves.
At the same time, several first-time Spey anglers experienced the excitement of hooking their very first king salmon. Our guides spent countless hours teaching casting techniques, reading water, and building confidence. Before long, newcomers were connected to fish they’ll never forget.
One memorable highlight came from Amber Jensen, who arrived at Sandy River Lodge with only limited Spey experience. On her very first day, she had opportunities at four impressive Chinook—a testament to quality instruction, quality water, and a willingness to learn.
Longtime guest Jon Maggs added another chapter to his remarkable history with Aleutian Adventures by landing the largest king salmon of the season alongside guide Ryan Celusta. After nearly two decades of joining us for kings and steelhead, Jon has become as dependable as our salmon runs.
While the fishing is what brings everyone to the Alaska Peninsula, life at camp is what keeps so many anglers returning.
Evenings were spent unwinding in the quiet of the wilderness, enjoying a well-earned cocktail, and reliving the day’s memorable moments. Our camp chefs, Dave Corbin and Aubrey Barton, once again wowed guests with exceptional meals that were every bit as memorable as the fishing itself.
These moments—shared meals, conversations, and lasting friendships—are just as much a part of the Aleutian Adventures experience as the fish we pursue.
The Alaska Peninsula once again reminded us that we’re fortunate to fish in one of North America’s last truly wild places.
Guests encountered moose with young calves, bears, caribou, wolves, and countless species of birds throughout the season. One unforgettable highlight came during the final week at Sandy River Lodge when four wolves casually wandered through camp, providing a powerful reminder that here, we’re simply visitors in their wilderness.
Clear days also rewarded guests with sweeping mountain vistas that stretched across the Peninsula—views that are every bit as unforgettable as the fishing itself.
If there was one theme that defined the 2026 king season, it was optimism. Strong fishing conditions, a steady progression of fresh Chinook, and an abundance of large fish made for one of the most enjoyable king seasons in recent memory.
