Steelhead 2026: A Season of Persistence

Nov 3, 2026

With another fall steelhead season in the books, we’re looking back on the experiences, memorable catches, and time spent on the water at Sandy River Lodge, Sapsuk River Camp, and Steelhead Creek Camp.

For those who have experienced steelhead fishing in Alaska, there’s something special about this time of year. The changing colors, crisp fall air, and anticipation of what each day might bring create an atmosphere unlike any other fishing season.

And as always, Mother Nature had a few surprises in store!

The 2026 conditions

A Season That Kept Us on Our Toes

Our 2026 steelhead season brought a little bit of everything. Unpredictable weather, high water, and changing river conditions meant our guides and guests had to remain flexible and adapt to what each day presented.

Some days offered encouraging opportunities, while others required a little more patience and persistence. Our guides felt there were fish to be caught, but convincing those fish to cooperate wasn’t always easy.

Of course, that’s part of what makes pursuing wild steelhead so rewarding. These remarkable fish are never guaranteed, and every opportunity to connect with one is something special.

Despite the changing conditions, some beautiful steelhead were brought to hand throughout the season. Each successful encounter was a reason to celebrate, and the fish that did cooperate were certainly appreciated!

More than the numbers

The Pursuit Is Part of the Reward

From Sandy River Lodge to Sapsuk River Camp and Steelhead Creek Camp, our guests and guides shared another fall season exploring some of Alaska’s remarkable steelhead waters.

While each property offers its own unique setting and experience, they all share something important: the opportunity to pursue wild steelhead in beautiful, remote surroundings with experienced guides who genuinely love what they do.

This season was a reminder that successful days on the river aren’t always measured by the number of fish landed.

Sometimes it’s the anticipation of the next cast, the excitement of finally connecting with a fish, or the satisfaction of knowing you’ve given it your best effort.

Other times, it’s simply the opportunity to spend another day on the water with good people in an extraordinary place.

Those moments are just as much a part of the experience as the fish themselves.

Behind the experience

Our Staff Make the Difference

One of the greatest parts of every steelhead season isn’t measured in fish—it’s measured in people. The majority of our guests were returning anglers, many of whom have spent years making annual pilgrimages to these rivers. Watching old friends reunite each June has become just as much a tradition as the steelhead themselves.

At the same time, several first-time Spey anglers experienced the excitement of hooking their very first steelhead. Our guides spent countless hours teaching casting techniques, reading water, and building confidence. Before long, newcomers were connected to fish they’ll never forget.

A note of gratitude

Thank You for Another Memorable Season

One of the things we’re most proud of this season is the way our guides and lodge teams responded to the challenges Mother Nature presented.

While we can’t control the weather, water conditions, or whether the fish decide to bite, we can control our preparation, effort, attitude, and the way we take care of our guests.

Throughout the season, our teams worked hard to make the most of every opportunity, adapting to conditions and doing everything within their control to deliver the best possible experience.

We’re grateful for their dedication, professionalism, and positive attitudes, and equally grateful to the guests who embraced the adventure alongside them.

It’s the shared experiences, friendships, and memories that make these seasons so rewarding.
