Few fly patterns have earned a more permanent place in an Alaska silver salmon fly box than the Starlite Leech. Originally developed as a simple yet highly effective leech imitation, the pattern quickly became a favorite among guides for its ability to consistently produce aggressive grabs from fresh coho salmon.
Over the years, the pattern has evolved. One of the most popular modern variations is the UV Polar Starlite Leech, developed by the team at Alaska Fly Fishing Goods. By incorporating UV Polar Chenille and refining the pattern’s color combinations, they enhanced an already proven fly with even greater visibility, movement, and fish-catching appeal. Today, it has become a staple on rivers across Alaska and one our guides at Sapsuk River Camp rarely begin a day without.
What makes it so effective? The answer lies in its simplicity. The rabbit-strip tail breathes and pulses naturally with every swing or strip, the UV body provides just the right amount of flash, the weighted eyes help the fly reach the strike zone quickly, and its bold profile remains easy for fish to find in a variety of water conditions. Whether fished on a single-hand rod or swung on a Spey rod, it’s a pattern that consistently earns its place in the rotation.
A special thanks to our friends and partners at Alaska Fly Fishing Goods for producing the fly-tying tutorial below. Their instructional videos are an outstanding resource for anglers looking to sharpen their tying skills and fill their boxes with proven Alaska patterns before their next adventure.
