Fish Where the Wild Things Are
What Will You Need?
When preparing for a fishing trip to the rugged Aleutian Islands, it’s crucial to pack strategically for the unpredictable conditions, but keep in mind, we ask that you to limit your belongings to 50 pounds.
Start with moisture-wicking base layers and insulating fleece or down for warmth, paired with waterproof outer layers like a Gore-Tex jacket and pants. You’ll need durable fishing pants, warm socks, and waterproof boots for both wading and hiking, plus a sun hat and a warm beanie for varying weather. Don’t forget a pair of waterproof gloves for fishing and a backup pair for downtime at camp.
For fishing gear, bring your spey rods (7-9 weight), reels, and an assortment of floating and sinking shooting head lines, with ample backing and tapered leaders. A selection of streamers, nymphs, and dry flies will be essential for targeting King, Silver, and Steelhead salmon. A pair of chest-high, breathable waders, along with a waterproof fly box, fishing vest, or pack, should complete your gear essentials. Polarized sunglasses are a must for spotting fish in the river’s glare.
At camp, a warm sleeping bag rated for cold temperatures, a headlamp with extra batteries, and a quick-drying towel will make your stay more comfortable. Be sure to pack sunscreen, insect repellent, personal toiletries, and any medications you may need in waterproof cases. A small first aid kit is always a good idea, and don’t forget a portable battery pack for charging devices and a water bottle for hydration. Bring dry bags to keep everything safe from the elements, and if you have space, toss in a camera or GoPro to capture your adventures. Optional extras include a fishing journal for logging catches, binoculars for wildlife viewing, and bear spray for safety in the remote wilderness.
